Tornado Threat Policy
St. Luke’s Eye Care and
Laser Center recognizes that a Tornado is possible.
If a tornado should occur,
the staff member should take the following actions:
- Remain calm
- Clear all desktops and
workstations of paper/documents
- If you have time before
the storm strikes, move any outdoor furniture, garbage cans and similar items
inside. This will prevent them from becoming flying debris
- Pay attention to severe
weather advisories issued by the National Weather Services and local
authorities
- Move all staff and
patients to the basement
- Stay away from windows,
mirrors or anything that might shatter
- If you are unable to get
to the basement, go to interior hallway areas or the Patient education room
- Small rooms are
typically safer than larger rooms
- Get under a sturdy table
or desk or brace yourself in a doorway or corner
- Once the tornado is
over, move carefully and with caution watching for fallen items, debris, or
broken glass. Do not rush for the exit.
- Use a flashlight for
light if needed. Do not use a lighted match or electrical switches in case of
gas leaks
- Check for injured and
trapped persons. Do not attempt to move seriously injured persons unless they
are in immediate danger of further injury
- Check for fires and
extinguish them with a fire extinguisher. If unable to extinguish the fire,
leave immediately
- Everyone will meet at
the Steele Elementary School play ground, check in with the Safety
Coordinator, Sandra Robben-Weber, and remain there until advised otherwise.
- The Safety Coordinator,
Sandra Robben-Weber will account for all personnel and will inform the
emergency responders if anyone is missing.
